1995: The first attempt to build an openfreely editable web sites for biology was carried out by Jong Bhak in 1995. Using Perl programming language, he tried build a very open hypertext HTML system.

In the late 1990s, there were already useable open hypertext system called wiki. Wiki is just a hypertext HTML system. The name wiki is convenient to refer to it.

In the early 2000s, Twiki, Kwiki, and Mediawiki were tested and used for Biowiki as an easy CMS (content management system).

In the mid 2000s, there were hundreds of openfree biowiki sites running in KOBIC (Korean Bioinformation Center) where Jong Bhak was the director. A wysiwyg Mediawiki version was used for this and it was confusingly called Biowiki. The latest version of Biowiki is 3.0 (2010).
